Service Terms for Food
By Patricia Lee

reception terms

Family Style: Waiters deliver platters of food to each table and your guest pass them around.

French Service: Waiters serve each guest individually from a tray held by another waiter.

Gratuity: Caterers usually tack on the tip (20%) on your final tally, but you can tip additional amount if the service was exceptionally excellent.

Off-site Location: Sites that offer few or none of the services and supplies you need. But these locations are usually the most unique. You will have to hire separate caterers, bar service and rental equipment.

On-site Location: Sites that include everything you need for your reception.

Plated Service: The plates are served with food from the kitchen and placed in front of your seated guests.

Tray-Butlered Service: Tray-Butlered Service: During the cocktail hour, waiters offer your guest hors d'oeuvres and drinks from trays
